The first time I saw She Swings, She Sways was on a summerâs day âneath a gazebo in one of those idyllic Iowa town squares that look like a Hollywood B-movie set for a Norman-Rockwell-cum-Music-Man after-school special. The weather was perfect humidity-wise, as summers go in this neck of the woods. A small crowd had gathered, and what looked like a laid back, no frills group of musicians was getting set to strike up the band. I had heard these guys were from Ottumwa and were quite good but had no real expectations.
They kicked off their set, and it was clear from the first that these guys had something going; they were self-possessed, melodically strong, unpretentious, sweet like organic watermelon. You know what I mean? All mixed metaphors aside, my socks werenât bowled over but I …

They didnât have to travel far to find what they were looking for. The members of She Swings, She Sways didnât even have to leave Iowa.
The Ottumwa-based band will perform at noon on Friday at Java House, 211 1/2 E. Washington St., as part of the âJava Blendâ series. The group has received positive feedback for its latest album, Wasted Love Songs, which was released in July 2008.
The sextet is imbued with a bevy of musical influences. Having not grown up in the âInformation Age,â they had to obtain their fill of music the old-fashioned way â radio and MTV â said guitarist/vocalist John Gordon.
âLiving in Iowa meant that none of us was ever part of any legitimate âscene,â â Gordon said. âMost of our musical teeth were cut on whatever was in the top-40 …

Like this one, from She Swings, She Sways. Theyâre a 6-man (well, 5-men and 1-woman) band from the home of Radar OâReilly: Ottumwa, Iowa. They play self-described âMidwestern musicâ and they once rescued a horse who had fallen through a frozen pond. You can read more about them here.
I popped this one on in the background while making soup for the kids. When it came time to eat and I went to turn it down, my 8-year old said, âHey, wait, I like that songâ.
Their stuff is kind of catchy.

Little Village Review: She Swings She Sways – Wasted Love Songs
Wasted Love Songs is brilliantly easy on the ears, but once the emotional payload is delivered, itâs anything but an easy listen. And âwasted?â Not hardly.
A common sophomoric âinsightâ into music is that we only have 12 notes, and that this imposes some upper limit on the possibility of musical expression. Itâs not like itâs hard to demolish this idea with combinatorial mathematics, but both the argument and refutation are beside the point when you consider music made by real musicians. The particular case of She Swings She Sways is one where a group constrains themselves to simple instrumentation, simple melodies and simple lyrics. In terms of musical choices and instrumentation, they use nothing that wasnât available 200 years ago. Well thereâs a bit of electric guitar, but Iâve no doubt theyâd be every bit as charming without them. And …

Wildy’s World: Review: She Swings, She Sways
She Swings, She Sways – Wasted Love Songs 2008, Authentic Records
From the home of Radar OâReilly, Ottumwa, Iowa, comes She Swings, She Sways, an interesting Americana sextet you need to know a little more about. She Swings, She Sways has a very homey feel, like music you might play with friends sitting around a kitchen table on a Saturday night. Itâs that at home feel that lends much of the charm to the bandâs full length debut, Wasted Love Songs. Each band member contributed to the subject matter here. Stories of love lost or unrequited in the voice of Midwest sensibility and caution reach a crescendo of melancholy that approaches beauty. She Swings, She Sways tells their stories.
She Swings, She Sways has an easy on the ears, somewhat melancholy Americana sound that will set you at ease right off the bat. What I Wouldn’t …
